The Story

American alligators are large, freshwater reptiles found in swamps, rivers and lakes of the Southeastern United States. Alligators can reach a length nearly 15 feet (4.5 M) and, historically, have been recorded at lengths up to 20 feet (6 M). Alligators are carnivores that feed on small vertebrates such as fish, turtles, mammals, birds and carrion.

This original specimen resides in the Museum of Osteology collection.
