Real West African Helmeted Turtle Skull and Shell

The West African helmeted turtle (Pelomedusa subrufa) is a hardy, freshwater species widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, including much of West Africa. It is commonly found in ponds, marshes, seasonal pools, and slow-moving waters, and is especially well adapted to environments that fluctuate between wet and dry conditions.

Unlike many aquatic turtles, this species lacks a hinged plastron but instead uses its strong limbs and aggressive temperament as defense. It is an opportunistic omnivore, feeding on insects, amphibians, carrion, small fish, and plant matter. Known for its resilience, the helmeted turtle can aestivate during dry periods by burrowing into mud until water returns.
